leadership

Welcome to the leadership blog at Jacobs Executive Coaching. Thanks for stopping by!

Here I’ll share my thoughts, and the thoughts of others, on what I believe to be one of the most critical factors in organizational and business success: leadership.

I’m not talking about management, which is also critical to this success, but leadership. Real leadership. Leadership with a capital “L”.

I began to explore what leadership is and isn’t when I launched my first business, Jacobs Communications Consulting, in 2007. What’s ironic is that I had been in PR agency management and leadership for more than 25 years. While I had my successful leadership moments over those years, I have to admit that I had more than my share of leadership failures. I can’t claim I was a consistent and evolved leader.

Perhaps we should take a momentary detour to define leadership. Here’s how I see it: management is about process. Managing projects, managing budgets, managing timetables, managing accounts. All critically important, no?

But for me, leadership is about one thing: leading people. Specifically, it’s leading your followers to achieve organizational goals. But it always  gets down to people.

I’ve always believed that leaders are not defined by their fancy titles, cushy offices, or big salaries, but one thing: When they turn around, do they see  inspired followers motivated to go pursue a common vision?

Is that what you see when you turn around?

If you’re not happy with what you see, please reach out. Let’s discuss how you can become the kind of leader you want to be.

Here’s a link to an article I wrote about leadership a few years back. I believe it’s still relevant, and hope you find it valuable.

In the meantime, what’s your definition of leadership? Please leave me a comment, and let’s start a conversation.
